Gerhard Richter mentions in his writings that music is the closest art form to painting. Structure and improvisation, intellect and imagination, concept and process are at work on a high level of performance.
A fugue works on dualistic principles - a subject and a countersubject are interacting.
In my painting process I am also employing dualistic principles: it is a play between - painted/illusive space and the 2D impasto surface structure created by layers of varnish and sand; dark and light; rough and smooth; matte and shiny; heavy weights of paint/material and very thin washes of paint; hard edges and soft edges; straight pencil lines and runners of paint; etc… Painterly qualities always enhance the rhythmic pattern of the initial structure.
