Bill Griffin
Bill Griffin grew up in the north of Cork City. He works in an unusual way, preferring semi-darkness, likening the process to automatic writing. He makes marks on a canvas, then takes it out to the daylight and looks to see what he can find in it.
Bill Griffins use of colour and his subject matter is extremely varied and he seems to have a natural feel for a well-balanced composition. There is a similarity between his work and the early work of Jack Yeats.
This is perhaps a result of the way that Griffin uses his subconscious when he is painting with half-glimpsed works seen in the distant past, asserting the strong impression they must have made on him.
Bill Griffin, as reported on Sky News and RTE, has been commissioned by the Cuban National Arts Council to paint a portrait of Fidel Castro. This is a major achievement as he was selected from a large body of international artists. He has also been commissioned to carry out a portrait of Charlie Bird and his recent exhibitions have been very well received.
